Tomislav Tomic on the Hidden Trap of Self-Improvement: Why Trying to Fix Yourself Can Make Things Worse

Can trying to fix ourselves become part of the problem? Explore a different perspective on emotional reactions, self-improvement, and personal transformation.

For people interested in personal growth, there’s almost always something else to work on. Another limiting belief to overcome, another emotional pattern to understand, another part of ourselves that needs attention. But what happens when the effort to improve ourselves becomes part of the problem?

This question is at the heart of What If You Didn’t Have to Fix Yourself?, an episode of Espresso with Tomislav, a podcast hosted by personal transformation coach and Nestioo Method founder Tomislav Tomic.

With professional experience in coaching, mindfulness, and personal development dating back to 2009, Tomic explores a familiar challenge in personal growth: the belief that uncomfortable emotions and recurring reactions must be resolved before we can move forward in life.

When Anxiety Becomes a Problem About Anxiety

Imagine feeling anxious before an important conversation. The anxiety itself may be uncomfortable, but there’s often something else happening. We start questioning why we feel this way, particularly after years of working on ourselves.

Now we’re not only anxious about the conversation. We’re frustrated with ourselves for being anxious.

This additional struggle can turn an ordinary emotional experience into another problem that needs fixing. Instead of simply having the conversation, we may feel that we first need to calm down, understand the anxiety, or somehow overcome it.

But what if the anxiety could be there without preventing us from moving forward?

The episode explores the possibility of allowing uncomfortable emotions to be present without immediately trying to change them. This doesn’t mean that difficult feelings will disappear or that acceptance should become another technique for making them go away. The difference lies in no longer making emotional comfort a requirement for taking action.

The Difference Between Reacting and Choosing

Another important distinction concerns the motivation behind our actions. Two people can make exactly the same decision while experiencing it very differently.

Setting a boundary, for example, might be an immediate reaction to feelings that have become unbearable. But it could also be a conscious decision based on what matters to us and what we’re willing to accept in a relationship.

The outward action may look identical, yet the experience behind it is different.

This distinction connects with one of the central ideas behind the Nestioo Method: personal transformation isn’t only about learning to manage emotional reactions. It’s also about gradually changing our relationship with those reactions and developing the capacity to experience life differently.

That doesn’t mean ignoring emotions, tolerating unhealthy situations, or avoiding practical decisions. It means recognizing that we don’t always have to change how we feel before we can choose how to respond.

Perhaps the more interesting question isn’t how much inner work we still need to do, but how much of that work is actually helping us live more fully.
