Neurologist and sleep specialist Dr. Pedram Navab has published The Alchemy of Sleep, a new book examining rest through sleep medicine, psychology and spiritual traditions. Released by Shambhala on October 27, 2026, the paperback brings conventional knowledge about sleep together with reflective practices such as dream journaling, mindfulness and breathwork. An ebook edition was released on the same date.
The book approaches sleep as more than a nightly performance target. It considers the physical need for rest alongside the ways people experience dreams, nighttime vulnerability, imagination and the transition between waking and sleeping. Navab’s central subject is the relationship people develop with sleep, particularly when rest becomes something to monitor, optimize or worry about.
His professional background combines neurology, sleep medicine and integrative care. That combination shapes the book’s range of topics. Insomnia, sleep apnea, parasomnias and sleep paralysis appear alongside broader questions about exhaustion and the pressure to achieve ideal sleep. These are different conditions with different clinical implications, and the book’s reflective practices should not be confused with evidence-based diagnosis or treatment.
Navab includes approaches drawn from several traditions. Dream journaling offers a way to record nighttime experiences and consider their personal meaning. Mindfulness and breathwork provide opportunities to notice the transition toward rest. Sound practices and shadow work introduce more interpretive and experiential elements, inviting readers to examine the emotions and associations they bring to the night.
The book also considers how contemporary sleep culture can turn rest into another task to complete. Tracking devices, performance metrics and elaborate routines may help some people, but they can also become part of a demanding relationship with sleep. Navab’s approach places attention on rest as an ordinary human need, not only a number to improve.
The Alchemy of Sleep is available as a 272-page paperback, with a shorter page count in the ebook format. Andrew Weil contributes the foreword. The publication addresses general readers interested in sleep and wellbeing, while its combination of medical and contemplative perspectives may also interest mindfulness educators and holistic practitioners.
The book’s spiritual interpretation of dreams and rest is presented as a perspective rather than a demonstrated medical mechanism. Its value for readers lies in bringing several conversations into one place: what sleep medicine can establish, how personal habits affect the experience of rest, and how contemplative traditions have approached nighttime awareness. The result is a new resource for considering sleep without reducing it to either biology alone or spiritual symbolism alone.
